The library is pleased to provide the Aroostook Oral History Project online so that access to the collection is more accessible than ever. The Project came into being when representatives of the town libraries went into their communities and recorded stories of local citizens on cassette tapes. These stories were collated and the resultant collection was provided to each library, the University of Maine and the Library of Congress. As technology changed, the collection of tapes saw a reduction in use. The material is being digitized and cleaned up for use on this site. Some of the tapes are in bad shape and may not be able to be reclaimed. The Aroostook Oral History Project of 1972 was managed by Charlotte Lenentine Melvin of Ricker College. Funding was provided by a Title I, LSCA grant. Thanks is owed to Stephen Vance, who built the database, donated all the equipment, and installed it at the library.
